What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional science of natural healing invented by the Indian Sagas, thousands of years ago. Even today, Ayurveda continues to be one of the most sought-after treatments for various ailments because of its holistic and powerful mind-body healing system.

What are the 3 body types as per Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, there are three body types; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These three elements can be found in anything and everything, in different amounts. These elements also influence our mental, physical, and emotional health.

Vata

Vata is mainly composed of space and air. Its prominent qualities are; dry, light, cold, rough, mobile, subtle, and clear. This body type is linked with creativity and flexibility. Vata supervises all the movements of our mind and body. It even controls the blood flow, breathing, removal of waste from our body and all the thoughts that cross our minds. Vata is considered as the leader out of the three body types in Ayurveda because Pitta and Kapha cannot move without it. Therefore, maintaining a proper Vata balance is immensely necessary.

Pitta

Pitta is in charge of metabolism, digestion and the production of energy. The main function of pitta is change. People with dominant Pitta traits are fiery in nature. The main qualities of Pitta are; hot, light, intense, pungent, penetrating, acidic, and sharp. Pittas are thoroughly intellectual and have a stern concentration.

Pitta supervises all the important digestive agnis of our body. When the right balance is maintained, pittas are excellent decision makers, teachers, and orators. They also possess a sharp sense of humour, along with being direct and outspoken. Excess pitta can cause a feeling of discomfort in the body. It also makes a person go through stages of anger, frustration, and irritation, along with indigestion, skin problems, etc.

Kapha

Kapha manages the structure of our body. It helps bind the cells together to form muscle, fat, bone, and sinew. The main function of Kapha is to provide protection. The qualities of Kapha include; heavy, solid, cold, steady, oily, slow, and soft.

People with Kapha dominant personalities are very calm and thoughtful. They possess an ability to enjoy life as it comes, and they are very comfortable in their regular routine. They also maintain an excellent digestion routine and can sleep peacefully every night. When it comes to physical traits, they have a strong build and have an excellent stamina.

When the proper balance is not maintained, they tend to become overweight, sleep disproportionately, and can even suffer from conditions like asthma and diabetes.
